Choose smooth lemons with bright yellow skin and no tinge of green. Brown spots will not affect flavor, but avoid hard or shriveled skins. Ream lemon halves with a fork for maximum juice.
To make a simple syrup, stir together sugar and 3/4 cup water in a small saucepan; cook over medium heat just until sugar melts. Cool slightly.
Place 4 cups water in a pitcher. Add syrup. Stir in lemon juice.
Serve over ice with lemon and lime slices, if desired.
