Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and allspice; stir well. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives until crumbly.
In a small bowl beat yam and 6 tablespoons milk; stir into flour mixture. Add milk if needed to form a soft dough.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Pat to 3/4-inch thick. Cut into 3-inch rounds; place rounds on a baking sheet. Bake 18 to 21 minutes or until golden brown.
